Jet Lag and Jet Packs

Jet Lag and Jet Packs

Well, I'm alive. That's a good start. For those of you following along, the last news was that I was at the airport, preparing to embark. Whether I would actually make it out of Boston was questionable, as if you'll recall, we were on the tail end of a "potentially historic" blizzard. It appears that I made it out just in time, because I hear that Boston just broke the record for most snowfall in one week (with more on its way!).

"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door."

..."You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to" (Tolkien).

I'm typing this from the airport, where I arrived ridiculously early to avoid various delays. As you read this, I am probably in an airplane. (This is a pretty safe bet, given that my total travel time between here and Melbourne is about 30 hours, including layovers.) It's been a stressful few days what with packing and storing my apartment and running around like a headless chicken trying to remember everything I might have forgotten.

Music Monday: "Goodnight New York" (Vienna Teng)

Music Monday: "Goodnight New York" (Vienna Teng)

I wasn't intending to do a Music Monday post today and then it kind of just happened. There's a lot of stuff going on over here. For one thing, my last day at the bookstore (for a while) was yesterday, and I got a lovely lovely send-off, complete with a book on Australian slang (very handy!) and sunscreen for use in the place where it is actually summer right now. Hard to believe, I know.

Introducing the Know Me Betterman Blog Series

It's a little surreal to pause and realize that this website has been kicking around for a few months already. But there's nothing quite like your own domain.)

I've taken a few months and a few blog posts to get settled in my new digital space. But now that that's done (and in honor of the new year), I think it's time for some ceremonial ribbon-cutting. Don't you?

Today is the First Day of the Rest of Your Life

Today is the First Day of the Rest of Your Life

I suppose I'm a fan of resolutions, but most of mine (like most of yours, let's be honest), are broken within the first month, if not the first week. If I were trying, I could come up with several tired old goals (get in shape, read more, read better, write more, etc. etc.) for 2015. (Which are great goals to have, don't get me wrong. For me, they're just tired in that I make them year after year, and inevitably end up falling short.)

Harry Potter and the Months-Long Readathon

Harry Potter and the Months-Long Readathon

It is impossible to encapsulate the breadth of my involvement with Harry Potter. Suffice to say (for the time being, for this pitifully small blog post) that my parents bought the first two books while we were on a weeks-long road trip. My brother and I passed them back and forth over the next several days. By the end of the trip we had each read both Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets about five times.
